A Maui jet ski rental at Kaanapali Beach puts you on a Sea-Doo that you steer yourself, in open water, with no guide and no single-file line to follow. It is also the only jet ski rental company on the island, which makes it an easy call for anyone who wants this on their Maui list.
Why this Maui jet ski rental made our list
Most Maui water sports are things you ride along on. You sit on a boat, a raft or a catamaran and someone else does the driving. Jet skiing in Maui is the opposite, and that is the whole appeal. For 45 minutes the throttle is yours, the horizon is wide open, and the only decision is which way to point the bow.
The setup is what sets this jet ski rental in Maui apart from a standard beach rental. Instead of launching from the sand, you meet at a red and white umbrella on Kaanapali Beach and take a three-minute boat ride to Jet Ski Island, a private floating platform where the skis are staged. Your briefing, launch and landing all happen there, which keeps the swimmers and beach traffic well out of the picture.
Then there is the fleet. The operator, Pacific Jet Sports, runs 18 Sea-Doo skis, so groups can ride together, and the riding area covers roughly 100 acres. That is a lot of room for a first-timer to get comfortable and a lot of room for a teenager to find out what the skis can do.
It also earns its place on a list of the best Maui water sports. Jet Ski Maui is a 2026 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice winner, and it sits at 4.5 stars across a few hundred reviews on Yelp and Tripadvisor. A jet ski rental in Maui is a short activity that is easy to fit between a morning on the beach and dinner, and that matters when you are planning a full Maui week.
The only jet ski operation on Maui
There is nothing to compare this one against, because Pacific Jet Sports is the only jet ski operation on Maui. No other company on the island is permitted to rent jet skis, so if riding a Sea-Doo is on your Maui list, this is the place, full stop. That is also why it earns a spot here rather than a shrug: the format is a real open-water ride on your own ski, not a follow-the-leader tour, and it has held a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice rating while being the single option in its category for years.
What the experience is like
You check in at the umbrella on the beach, sign the waivers and get fitted for a life jacket. Then a boat shuttles your group out to Jet Ski Island, about three minutes offshore.
On the island, an instructor runs the safety briefing. It is short and practical, and it covers the basics you will use all ride:
- The engine cut-off lanyard. You clip it to your life jacket before you start the ski. If you fall off, the engine stops automatically and the ski stays put instead of motoring away without you.
- Starting, steering and stopping. A jet ski steers a bit like a bicycle, and the throttle is a squeeze of your fingers. Skis handle best once you have some speed up, so the instructors suggest giving it gas through turns rather than creeping.
- Spacing. You stay well clear of other skis and boats, look both ways as you ride, and keep to a trolling speed near the island. Around the island platform, everyone circles in the same direction because of the traffic.
- Getting back on. There is no propeller on a jet ski, since it runs on a jet of water. If you fall off, you swim back to the stern, climb on from the rear, check your life jacket, reattach the lanyard and restart the engine.
- The boundaries. The riding area is marked with buoys, about a quarter mile offshore and away from swimmers, snorkelers and divers. You stay inside them.
Once everyone is briefed, the instructor slides your ski away from the dock with you aboard and your time begins. From there it is a true open-water ride. You carve wide turns, open it up, circle back, and cover as much ground as you like inside the marked area. The open ocean beyond the dock stretches toward Lanai and Molokai, and riders sometimes share the water with pods of Hawaiian spinner dolphins.
Doubles are where couples and parents with older kids tend to land. One person drives, the other holds on, and you can take turns on the next ride. The jet is fast, but the handling is forgiving enough that most first-timers are comfortable within a minute or two.
When the ride ends, staff signal you in and you park at the padded side of the dock. Afterward you can hang out on the island with snacks and refreshments or browse the small floating shop, then take the three-minute boat back to the beach. You are done, dry-ish and still have the rest of the day.
Prices and what you get
For a jet ski rental Maui prices start at the amounts below, plus tax and booking fees.
| Option | From |
|---|---|
| Single ski (one rider), 45 minutes | $150 |
| Double ski (two riders), 45 minutes | $200 |
| Observer seat on the boat to Jet Ski Island | $40 |
| Flyboard, 30 minutes of instruction and flying | $220 |
Each ride includes the briefing, life jackets for everyone on board, the boat to and from Jet Ski Island, and snacks and refreshments on the island afterward. An optional photo package is offered at booking, from $75 for a set of action shots of one ski.
Two ways to pay less. Booking directly online takes 10% off, and the early and late slots in the day are discounted, so a ride first thing in the morning or near the end of the day costs less than one at midday.
For two people, a double at $200 is the lower total price. For two adults who both want to drive, two singles cost more, but each of you gets your own machine.
A credit card is needed at check-in. The operator does not charge it unless equipment is damaged, and renters are responsible for injuries and damage to the ski, so it is worth riding with a bit of caution.
If you want something more extreme, flyboarding is available too. It is a 30-minute session of instruction and flying time on a water-powered flyboard, limited to riders 16 and up weighing between 85 and 315 pounds. It is not open to pregnant women, and it is limited to two people per hour, so book it ahead.
Who it’s for (and who should skip it)
Good fit for:
- Teens and older kids. At 16 they can drive on their own, and at 15 with an adult. For many families this is the activity that gets teenagers to put their phones down.
- Couples. A double ski is a good way to share an active, fun hour without a group.
- First-timers. No license is needed, and the briefing assumes you have never done this before.
- Groups. With 18 skis, a big family or a wedding party can ride together.
- Mixed groups. Non-riders can come out to the island as observers for $40 plus tax and fees, so nobody gets left on the beach. Riders with disabilities are welcomed, and staff help people in and out of the boat.
Think twice if:
- You want a slow, narrated sightseeing experience. This is a throttle-forward activity. If you would rather watch Maui go by, a cruise or snorkel tour fits better. Our West Maui snorkel tour is a good alternative.
- Your kids are small. Passengers can be any age, but they must be at least 32 inches tall to sit properly, and a parent has to vouch for them.
- You are visiting between December 15 and May 15. The operation closes for humpback season, so the ride is off the table.
Where to check in and how to get there
Meet at the red and white umbrella on Kaanapali Beach, on the sand just outside Whalers Village Shopping Center at 2435 Kaanapali Parkway. The umbrella is easy to spot once you are on the beach.
For jet ski Kaanapali is easy to reach by car. Free beach parking is available nearby, or you can pay to park at Whalers Village. Public restrooms are in the area. If you or someone in your group uses a wheelchair, there is a walkway from the parking area behind the Hyatt that leads to the umbrella, a place to leave wheelchairs, and accessible parking.
If you are staying in Kaanapali, it is a walk down the beach. Coming from elsewhere on the island, plan extra time for the drive and for parking before your slot. Our Maui regions guide helps if you are still deciding where to base yourself.
Your ride starts from Jet Ski Island, so you leave the beach on the boat rather than on the ski.
Best time to go
The season runs from May 16 to December 14. The operation closes from December 15 through May 15 while humpback whales are in the area, so you will not find a jet ski rental on Maui during peak whale season. If your trip falls in that stretch, our Maui whale watching page and the Maui whale season guide cover what to do in the water instead.
Within the season, time of day is where you have a choice. The early and late slots are discounted, and they are a good fit if you want to leave the middle of the day free. The online schedule runs from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with slots roughly every half hour.
The ocean here is a warm 80 degrees year round, so you will not need a wetsuit for temperature. Some riders wear one anyway because the jet from the back of a ski throws water and air hard, and a wetsuit top gives extra protection for anyone riding on the back.
If you are stacking activities, the 45-minute ride leaves plenty of time for lunch or a second adventure. Check our Maui parasailing page if you want another view of the coast.
Local tips before you book
- Book direct online. You get 10% off, and you can see the early and late discounted slots as you pick a time.
- Walk-ups are fine. If your plans are loose, show up at the umbrella and ask.
- Wear a swimsuit and ride barefoot. No reef booties or sandals needed. Bring a towel and sunscreen for after.
- Think about a wetsuit top. It is optional, but it can make a difference for a passenger on the back.
- Bring the observer. If one person in your group would rather not ride, the $40 observer seat gets them onto the island to watch and take photos.
- Add photos at booking. The optional photo package starts at $75 and covers one ski. If you want photos of more than one ski, the extra coverage is added per ski.
- Do not rush the throttle at first. The skis are powerful. Give yourself a minute or two to get a feel for the controls before you open it up.
- Call about cancellations. The booking page does not spell out a cancellation policy, so call (808) 667-2001 before you book if your plans might change.
The verdict
If you want one Maui jet ski adventure where you are in control and not along for the ride, this is it. The floating island launch, the wide riding area, the 18-ski fleet and the simple briefing make it easy to start and fun to keep doing.
It suits teens, couples and families best, it works for people who have never touched a jet ski, and the season is long enough, May 16 to December 14, to catch it on most summer and fall trips. Book direct online, pick an early or late slot, and bring a towel. If you are weighing Maui water sports, put this one near the top, then browse more things to do in Maui to round out the week.

No license of any kind is required. You do need to be at least 16 to drive alone, or 15 to drive with an adult, and waivers must be signed by someone 18 or older.

Are the rides safe for non-swimmers?
Everyone wears a properly fitted life jacket that floats you until you are back on the ski. Staff give a full briefing first, and the riding area is marked by buoys.
