If you only have room for one evening on the water, make it this Maui sunset cruise. Sea Maui’s Original Sunset Cocktail Cruise leaves from the sand at Kaanapali Beach, runs about two hours, and includes pupus and an open bar for a price that is hard to beat on this coast.

It is also one of the few evening sails here that works for the whole family. Kids come along, adults get a full bar, and on Tuesday and Thursday there is live music on deck.

Why this Maui sunset cruise made our list

Value is the first reason. Prices for this sunset cruise on Maui start from $86 per guest plus tax and booking fees, and that covers the sail, a spread of heavy appetizers and an open bar. Add up what a couple of cocktails and a snack plate cost at a Kaanapali resort around sunset, and the math gets friendly quickly.

The second reason is track record. Among Kaanapali sunset cruise options, this one has the longest history. Sea Maui has run from Kaanapali Beach since 2015, and this is the original trip in its lineup, a tradition on this stretch of coast. The listing carries a 4.9-star rating from more than 2,600 reviews, which is a strong showing for a trip that runs every night.

Third, it is easy. You check in at a kiosk on the beach walk, wade a few steps, climb a staircase and you are on a 55-foot catamaran with a drink in your hand. There is no harbor, no shuttle and no long drive to a marina, which matters when you have kids who are already tired from the day.

Finally, it is a rare sunset sail on Maui that welcomes all ages without feeling like a compromise. Parents sit on the netting with a Maui Mule while kids sprawl on the trampoline and eat sliders.

How it compares to the other Kaanapali sunset sails

Teralani Sailing, Trilogy and Hula Girl all run sunset sails off Kaanapali Beach too, and the Lahaina and Maalaea harbors have more. We compared them on price, what is included and reviews, and chose Sea Maui’s Original Sunset Cocktail Cruise because the open bar and heavy pupus are in the price from $86, kids are welcome, live music runs two nights a week, and it carries a 4.9 rating across more than 2,600 reviews. It is the best-value sunset on the island.

What the experience is like

Everyone checks in at the Sea Maui kiosk 30 minutes before departure. It sits on the Whalers Village beach walk between Leilani’s on the Beach and Hula Grill, and it is easy to spot by the white kiosk with the Sea Maui logo. A crew member stamps your parking ticket, confirms your waiver and gives a short safety briefing.

From there you walk down to the water. The boat is a beach-loading catamaran, so it sits right at the shoreline. The crew collects your shoes on the sand and stores them together on board, and you wade a few paces to a drop-down staircase. Expect to be wet from about the knees down.

Once aboard, you find a seat on the open-air deck, the benches or the trampoline nets up front. The vessel is Sea Maui II, a 55-foot performance catamaran with room for up to 48 guests. The captain and crew head out along the Kaanapali coast while the bar opens and the pupus start to circulate.

The scenery does the heavy lifting. On a clear evening you look across the water to Lanai and Molokai, and Kahoolawe sits low on the horizon. The sky usually shifts from gold to pink and then deep orange and purple. Dolphins show up now and then, and from December 15 to April 15 you are also on the lookout for humpback whales.

The boat turns back toward shore as the sun drops and returns to the beach just after sunset. You step off right where you started, the crew hands your shoes back and you walk up the beach walk toward dinner. Many guests treat the cruise as the start of the evening, not the end of it.

The food and drinks

The pupu menu is more substantial than the word suggests. Expect crispy pork sliders, a chicken parmesan salad, a crunchy Asian slaw and fried chicken with unagi and spicy chili garlic aioli. It is heavy-appetizer territory, so a lot of guests skip a big dinner afterward.

The open bar covers local and domestic beers, white wine, sparkling wine, whiskey, light and dark rum and vodka. The crew mixes Mai Tais, Maui Mules and other cocktails to order for guests 21 and over with ID. Everyone gets free soft drinks, lemonade, passion orange guava juice and water, so kids and non-drinkers are well looked after.

Live music nights

On Tuesday and Thursday, live music is part of the cruise. It adds a laid-back soundtrack without changing the length or the route of the trip. If you like a little energy with your sunset, pick one of those two evenings. If you want a quieter ride with conversation and wind, book any other night.

Prices and what you get

Sea Maui’s Maui cocktail cruise starts from $86 per guest plus tax and booking fees. Prices vary by season, so the number you see for a summer sail can differ from a winter whale-season date. The booking calendar shows the exact total for the day you choose.

Here is what that price covers:

  • About 2 hours at sea on Sea Maui II
  • Heavy pupus prepared by the Sea Maui kitchen partner
  • Full open bar for guests 21+ with ID
  • Soft drinks, lemonade, juice and water for everyone
  • Live music on Tuesday and Thursday
  • Up to 4 hours of validated parking at Whalers Village, stamped at the kiosk
  • Whale watching on sailings from December 15 to April 15

Crew gratuity is not included. Groups of 12 or more are handled through Sea Maui directly, so if you are traveling with a large party, contact them before booking.

Cocktail cruise or dinner cruise?

Sea Maui also runs a longer Maui sunset dinner cruise from the same beach. It lasts about 2.5 hours, sails on the larger 65-foot Sea Maui III and serves a chef-prepared buffet with grilled salmon, braised short rib and kung pao chicken. Its live music nights are Wednesday and Saturday, so the two cruises do not overlap on music.

The dinner cruise costs noticeably more. If you want a sit-down feel and the evening meal handled, it is worth it. If you want the sunset, a drink and enough food to take the edge off, the cocktail cruise is the better value and the shorter commitment, which also helps when kids are along.

Who it’s for (and who should skip it)

This cruise is a strong fit for:

  • Couples who want a relaxed sunset without a formal dinner
  • Families with kids of any age who want to be on the water at golden hour
  • Friends and small groups who like the idea of an open bar and a boat full of music
  • First-time visitors who want a classic Maui sunset sail without a lot of planning
  • Anyone who wants whale watching in winter without booking a separate morning trip

It is a weaker fit for a few people. Because boarding happens in the surf with a staircase, the cruise cannot accommodate guests with mobility issues, and it is not wheelchair accessible. Anyone who needs steady footing in shallow water should think twice.

Skip it, too, if you want a full dinner on the water. Pupus are generous, but this is not a sit-down meal, and the dinner option above fits better.

Pregnant guests are not barred, but Sea Maui recommends checking with a doctor first. The open ocean can bring swell, and boarding takes some balance. Guests who get motion sick should plan ahead, since this is open-ocean sailing.

Where to check in and how to get there

Check in at the Sea Maui kiosk on the beach walk at Whalers Village, 2435 Kaanapali Parkway. It sits between Leilani’s on the Beach and Hula Grill, right at the edge of the sand. The mailing address says Lahaina, which is why many visitors search for a Lahaina sunset cruise, but the boat leaves from Kaanapali Beach in West Maui.

Park in the main Whalers Village parking structure. Sea Maui validates up to 4 hours of parking, and you need to bring your physical ticket to the kiosk before you board so it can be stamped. The kiosk cannot validate after the boat returns in the evening, and any time beyond four hours is on you.

Arrive early. Check-in closes 30 minutes before departure, and guests who are late can lose their seats. Parking and traffic around Whalers Village are very busy at sunset boarding times, so build in a buffer of extra time, especially in the winter.

Best time to go

This sunset cruise on Maui runs daily all year, and departure times move with the sun. Expect roughly 4:30 pm in the winter months and as late as 5:30 pm in midsummer. Your confirmation email lists the check-in time for your date, so confirm it the day before.

For whales, book between December 15 and April 15. January, February and March are the busiest months for humpback activity off West Maui, and a sunset trip in that window doubles as a whale watch. Our Maui whale season guide explains what to expect, and if whales are your priority, the dedicated whale watching tours give you more time looking for them.

For live music, choose Tuesday or Thursday. For a quieter deck, any other night works.

If you are prone to motion sickness, the twin-hulled boat is steadier than most single-hull boats, but an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine taken an hour before check-in is a smart precaution.

Local tips before you book

  • Dress for wading. Skip long pants, long skirts and long dresses. Shorts or something you can roll above the knees works best.
  • Wear sandals. The whole trip is barefoot, and flip-flops are easy to kick off at the water.
  • Pack a layer. It cools off after the sun goes down, especially for the ride back.
  • Zip up your phone. Keep phones and valuables inside a bag, not in a pocket, while you wade to the boat.
  • Tell them about allergies. Note any food allergy or dietary restriction at booking, and give Sea Maui at least 48 hours of notice for the best chance of an alternative.
  • Sign the waiver early. A digital waiver link arrives by email right after you book. Do it before you head to the beach.
  • Check the weather policy. If Sea Maui cancels for swell, wind or storms, you can reschedule or get a refund. Otherwise, cancel at least 48 hours ahead.
  • Pair it with something. A morning on the water makes a great companion. Our West Maui snorkel tour pairs nicely with an evening sail.

The verdict

For most visitors, this is the best-value Maui sunset cruise on the island. It is the original Sea Maui trip, it includes real food and a real open bar, it welcomes kids, and it boards from the same beach where you probably already spent the afternoon. That is a lot of Maui sunset for the price.

Choose it if you want an easy, sociable evening and do not need a plated dinner. Pick Tuesday or Thursday for live music, or sail between December 15 and April 15 and watch the horizon for whales. Move up to the dinner cruise if you want the full meal, and skip both if wading into the surf is not an option for someone in your group.
