Where to Stay on Maui: Kaanapali vs Wailea vs Kihei vs Kapalua

Kaanapali, Wailea, Kihei or Kapalua? A local's comparison of Maui's four resort areas, with drive times, weather, prices and which tours leave from each.

Where you stay on Maui decides more than the view from your lanai. It decides how early you wake up for a Molokini boat, whether you can walk to a sunset cruise, and how often you sit in the afternoon traffic on the pali road. The island has two resort coasts, West Maui and South Maui, and each has a luxury end and a value end. That gives four real choices: Kaanapali, Kapalua, Wailea and Kihei.

Here is how they compare on the things that matter day to day, and which adventures leave from each one.

The short version

  • Kaanapali is the most convenient base on the island. Most beach-launched tours check in on the sand within a five-minute walk of Whalers Village. Big resorts, a three-mile beach walk, and the most things to do without a car.
  • Wailea is the polished luxury strip on the south side, with the best resort pools, the driest weather and a coastal path linking five golden coves. Closer to the airport and to Molokini.
  • Kihei is the condo town next door to Wailea, with the best value, great beach parks and the Kihei Boat Ramp where the Molokini rafts leave. Less polished, more local.
  • Kapalua is the quiet luxury enclave north of Kaanapali, cooler and greener, with world-class golf, the Kapalua Coastal Trail and Honolua Bay. Farthest from everything.

Drive times you should plan around

These are typical daytime drives. Add 15 to 30 minutes between 3 and 6 pm on the Honoapiilani Highway between Maalaea and Lahaina, where traffic bunches up every afternoon.

From To Typical drive
Kahului airport Kaanapali 45 to 60 min
Kahului airport Kapalua 55 to 70 min
Kahului airport Kihei 20 to 30 min
Kahului airport Wailea 30 to 35 min
Kaanapali Kapalua 15 min
Kaanapali Kihei Boat Ramp 40 to 50 min
Kaanapali Wailea 50 to 60 min
Wailea Kihei Boat Ramp 10 min
Wailea Maalaea Harbor 20 min
Kaanapali Paia (bike tour check-in) 60 min
Wailea Paia 35 to 40 min
Wailea Haleakala summit 1 hr 45 min
Kaanapali Haleakala summit 2 hrs

The pattern is simple. West Maui is far from the airport and close to the beach-launched tours. South Maui is close to the airport, Molokini and Upcountry, and far from the West side tours. Pick the side that matches the days you care about most. Our Maui island map shows the regions and departure points on one page.

Kaanapali

Kaanapali is a planned resort built in the 1960s along a three-mile beach north of Lahaina. The big hotels line the sand, Whalers Village sits in the middle with shops and restaurants, and a paved beach walk connects everything from the Hyatt at the south end to the Sheraton at Black Rock in the north.

Weather. Sunny and dry most of the year, with trade winds that keep the afternoons comfortable. It gets a bit more rain than Wailea in winter, but not enough to plan around.

The beach. Kaanapali Beach is wide, soft and gently sloped, and because the water is sheltered from the trades, boats load straight off the sand. Black Rock at the north end is the best shore snorkel in the resort zone, with turtles most mornings.

What leaves from here. More than anywhere else on the island. Parasailing checks in under yellow umbrellas on the sand three minutes north of Whalers Village. Jet skis meet at a red and white umbrella outside Whalers Village. The whale watching raft loads behind Whalers Village in winter. The sunset dinner cruise, sunset cocktail cruise, West Maui snorkel sail and afternoon snorkel all check in at a kiosk on the beach walk between Leilani’s and Hula Grill. The ATV course is 10 minutes south in the hills above Lahaina. You could do seven of the eleven adventures on this site without touching the car.

Who it suits. Families, first-timers, anyone who wants to walk to dinner and walk to the boat, and anyone who hates driving on vacation.

Who should look elsewhere. People who want quiet. Kaanapali is busy, the beach walk is a parade at sunset, and the resorts charge resort fees and parking fees on top of high nightly rates. Condos at the north end (Kaanapali Shores and neighbors) are the value play.

Kapalua

Fifteen minutes north of Kaanapali, past Napili, Kapalua is a quieter and more upscale resort area built around two golf courses and a few luxury hotels. It sits at the northwest corner of the island where the land starts to turn green.

Weather. Cooler and wetter than Kaanapali, with more wind and more passing showers, especially in winter. The upside is the greenery and the rainbows. The downside is a few more gray afternoons.

The beach. Kapalua Bay is a small, calm cove that is one of the best easy snorkels on the island. The Kapalua Coastal Trail runs along the shore past Oneloa Bay to D.T. Fleming Beach. Honolua Bay, ten minutes north, is a world-class snorkel site in summer and a famous surf break in winter.

What leaves from here. Nothing directly. Every tour is a 15-minute drive south to Kaanapali, which is not a hardship, or 60 minutes to Kihei for Molokini, which is. The West Maui snorkel sail often goes to Honolua Bay in summer, so you can see the Kapalua coast from the water even if you stay in Kaanapali.

Who it suits. Couples, golfers, honeymooners, and repeat visitors who have done the busy stuff and want a slower week. Also families with a condo budget, since Napili and Kahana between Kaanapali and Kapalua have the best mid-range oceanfront condos on the island.

Who should look elsewhere. Anyone planning a Molokini or Haleakala day. From Kapalua those are early alarms and long drives.

Wailea

Wailea is the south side’s answer to Kaanapali, built a decade later and aimed higher. A row of luxury resorts sits on a chain of five small golden-sand coves linked by a paved coastal path, with the Shops at Wailea in the middle and three golf courses behind.

Weather. The driest and sunniest resort area on Maui. Wailea sits in the lee of Haleakala and gets very little rain, even in winter. Afternoons can be hot and still, and the trade winds that cool Kaanapali often do not reach here.

The beach. Wailea Beach, Ulua, Mokapu, Polo and Keawakapu are all calm, clean and good for swimming. Ulua has the best snorkeling. The coastal path is a lovely sunrise walk, and in winter it is one of the easiest places on the island to spot whales from shore.

What leaves from here. Molokini is the headline. The Kihei Boat Ramp, where the Molokini snorkeling raft departs at 10:30 am, is 10 minutes away. Maalaea Harbor, where the big Molokini catamarans dock, is 20 minutes. Makena, where one luxury catamaran loads from the beach, is five minutes south. The Haleakala bike tour check-in in Paia is 35 to 40 minutes. The Road to Hana private tour picks up at your hotel. None of the West Maui beach tours leave from here, so a parasail or jet ski morning means a 50 to 60 minute drive each way.

Who it suits. Couples and families who want the best pools and the most reliable sun, and anyone who prefers their adventure days to point south and up the mountain rather than west.

Who should look elsewhere. Budget travelers. Wailea has the highest nightly rates on the island, and there is no walkable town. Dinner means the resort or a short drive.

Kihei

Kihei is the six-mile stretch of condos, strip malls and beach parks immediately north of Wailea. It is where a lot of locals live and where a lot of visitors stay without a resort budget.

Weather. Nearly as dry as Wailea, a touch windier in the afternoons, especially at the north end near Maalaea.

The beach. The three Kamaole beach parks at the south end are the heart of it: grassy parks, lifeguards, showers and good sand. Keawakapu, on the Wailea line, is the prettiest. Charley Young is the locals’ favorite. The Kihei Boat Ramp sits next to Kamaole III.

What leaves from here. The Molokini raft is the big one, and from a south Kihei condo it is a five-minute drive to the ramp. The drive times to Maalaea, Paia and Haleakala are the same as Wailea’s, give or take five minutes. West Maui tours are 45 to 55 minutes away.

Who it suits. Families on a budget, longer stays, anyone who wants a kitchen and a parking spot and does not need a lobby. Kihei condos routinely cost half of what a Kaanapali resort charges.

Who should look elsewhere. Honeymooners who want polish, and anyone who wants to walk to nice restaurants. Kihei has plenty of casual food but it is spread along a highway.

The lopsidedness is real. West Maui is where most of the tours are. South Maui is where Molokini and the mountain are closest. If your trip is mostly water sports, stay in Kaanapali. If your trip is Molokini, Haleakala and pools, stay in Wailea or Kihei. If you want both, the split stay below is the answer.

The split stay

A lot of repeat visitors book two hotels: three or four nights in Kaanapali for the beach-launched tours, then three or four nights in Wailea or Kihei for Molokini, the bike ride and the Hana road. The drive between the two sides is an hour, and moving mid-trip costs you half a day. In exchange you avoid six or eight hours of back-and-forth driving over the week. For a seven-night trip it is worth it. For five nights or fewer, pick one side.

Our 5-day Maui itinerary is built around a single base and shows how to order the days to keep the driving down.

A note on Lahaina

Lahaina, the old whaling town just south of Kaanapali, was devastated by the August 2023 wildfire. The town is rebuilding, and the resorts, beaches and tours north of it in Kaanapali and Kapalua are fully open. Front Street and most of the harbor businesses are not what they were. Visitors are welcome in West Maui, and spending money at the businesses that have reopened is one of the most useful things a visitor can do. Just do not plan an evening of strolling Front Street the way you might have in 2019.

Price ranges, roughly

Rates swing by season, so take these as orders of magnitude for a standard room or one-bedroom condo in shoulder season.

  • Wailea resorts: $600 to $1,200 a night and up, plus resort and parking fees.
  • Kaanapali resorts: $450 to $900 a night, plus fees. North-end condos from $300.
  • Kapalua: $700 and up at the hotels. Napili and Kahana condos from $250.
  • Kihei condos: $200 to $400 a night, often with free parking and no resort fee.

Christmas through New Year roughly doubles those numbers. Late spring and fall bring the best deals. Our guide to the best time to visit Maui covers the seasons.

Quick answers

Is Kaanapali or Wailea better?

Kaanapali if you want to walk to tours, shops and dinner. Wailea if you want the best pools and sun and your adventure days point toward Molokini and Haleakala.

Is Kihei a good place to stay?

Yes, especially for families and longer stays. It is the best value on the island and the closest base to the Molokini rafts. It is not fancy.

Is Kapalua too far from everything?

For a week of tours, a little. For a quiet week with a couple of Kaanapali days, it is lovely.

Where should first-timers stay?

Kaanapali, in most cases. It puts the most adventures within walking distance and makes the first trip easy.

Where should I stay for whale watching?

Kaanapali. The whale raft loads right off the beach, the cruises spot whales from December 15 to April 15, and you can see them from the beach walk in February.

Once you have picked a base, our best things to do in Maui guide is grouped by region so you can build your days around it.
